The San Miguel River is one of the last free flowing drainage’s of the Colorado River system. In the spring and early summer this snow- melt fed river plunges from the high peaks of the San Juan Mountains and pulsates through San Miguel and Norwood canyons. The contrast of the lush riparian ecosystem and the brilliant red sandstone canyon is undeniably unique.
Starting just 5 miles west of Telluride, the San Miguel River contains 40 miles of uninterrupted class III whitewater. This combined with the incredible beauty of the canyon makes for one of the best overnight trips for intermediate paddlers in Colorado.
Hardshell kayakers will need to have advanced-beginner river running skills, which may be attained by attending our 2 Day Beginners Course. You can also choose to pilot an inflatable kayak down this section of river. Inflatable kayakers will have the necessary skills after 1-2 days of training to successfully navigate the San Miguel.
