Upper Salt River, Arizona
The Upper Salt River is one of the most exotic multi-day runs in the country. Running 53 miles, this wilderness river boasts pool drop class III-IV whitewater, a series of unique gorges and of course the towering Saguaro Cactus. This is the place where many class III kayakers first sink their teeth into class IV whitewater. The Upper Salt is unique in the sense that access is relatively easy yet the canyon’s feel is remote and the geologic landscape stunning. It flows through oak and juniper woodlands down into striking Lower Sonoran desert vegetation. Excellent scenic riverside campsites are abundant and accessible only by raft. Kayakers who wish join us on this adventure will need a “combat roll” and previous class III experience.
Telluride Kayak School works in conjunction with Salt River Rafting on all Upper Salt River Trips. All or part of SRR’s operation is conducted on public lands under special permit from the White Mountain Apache Tribe and Tonto National Forest
